Quick answer: A monetized YouTube channel typically earns about $1–$10 per 1,000 views on long-form videos, so 100,000 views a month is roughly $100–$1,000. Finance, tech and education channels earn the most; music, gaming and Shorts earn the least.

How does YouTube calculate your earnings?

YouTube sells ad space on monetized videos. Advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions (CPM), and creators in the YouTube Partner Program receive 55% of the net ad revenue from long-form videos. What you see in YouTube Studio is RPM – revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s share, counting every view, including those that didn’t show an ad.

That’s why this calculator works with RPM: monthly views ÷ 1,000 × RPM = estimated monthly earnings. The RPM range changes with your channel category and with the countries your viewers come from – advertisers pay far more to reach viewers in the US, UK, Canada and Australia.

Typical YouTube RPM by channel category

Category Typical RPM Why
Finance & business $8 – $20 Advertisers pay a lot to reach buyers of financial products
Tech & reviews $4 – $10 Purchase-intent audiences and high-value products
Education & how-to $3 – $8 Long watch time and brand-safe content
Entertainment & vlogs $1 – $4 Broad audiences, lower ad prices
Gaming $1 – $4 Young audiences, lots of competing inventory
Music $0.50 – $2 Short, repeat plays; revenue often shared with rights holders
YouTube Shorts $0.03 – $0.10 Paid from a shared Shorts ad pool

Typical ranges for audiences mostly in high-paying countries. Treat them as a guide, not a guarantee.

  • Diversify with channel memberships, Super Thanks, sponsorships and merch.
  • Get new uploads seen faster – more views in the first days help the algorithm test your video with a wider audience.
FAQ

YouTube earnings questions

How much does YouTube pay per 1,000 views?
Most monetized channels earn roughly $1–$10 per 1,000 views (RPM) on long-form videos, but it can be lower for music and entertainment or higher for finance and tech. Shorts usually earn a few cents per 1,000 views.
How much money do you get for 1 million views on YouTube?
At a typical RPM of $1–$10, one million long-form views earn around $1,000–$10,000. The real figure depends on your niche, where your viewers live, video length and the time of year.
What is the difference between CPM and RPM?
CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions. RPM is what you actually earn per 1,000 views after YouTube’s share and including views that showed no ads, so RPM is always lower than CPM.
How much of the ad revenue does YouTube keep?
For long-form videos creators in the YouTube Partner Program receive 55% of the net ad revenue and YouTube keeps 45%. For Shorts, creators receive 45% of their allocated share of the Shorts ad pool.
When can I start earning money on YouTube?
To earn ad revenue you need to join the YouTube Partner Program: 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Why are my earnings lower than the calculator shows?
The calculator shows typical ranges. Earnings drop if many viewers use ad blockers, watch from lower-paying countries, watch short videos with fewer ad breaks, or if your content is marked as limited for advertisers.
