How Spotify royalties work
Spotify doesn’t pay a fixed rate per stream. It pools subscription and ad revenue in each country, and pays rights holders according to their share of all streams there (“streamshare”). That’s why the per-stream figure changes with where your listeners are and whether they pay for Premium.
The money goes to whoever released the recording – your distributor or label – who then pays you according to your deal. Songwriting royalties are paid separately, through publishers and collecting societies.

Important rules to know
1,000-stream minimum. A track needs at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months to earn recorded royalties.
Artificial streams are penalised. Spotify can charge labels and distributors for tracks with clearly artificial streaming, so only use promotion that reaches real listeners.
Noise and very short tracks must meet a minimum length to earn royalties.
On average about $0.003–$0.005 per stream to the rights holder, though it can be lower for listeners in lower-priced markets or on the free tier.

Are monthly listeners the same as streams?
No. Monthly listeners are unique people who played your music in the last 28 days. Streams count every play of 30 seconds or more, so one listener can create many streams.
Does Spotify pay songwriters too?
Yes, but separately. Publishing and mechanical royalties go to publishers and collecting societies such as PRS or ASCAP, not through your distributor.
