Why preview your thumbnail?
Most people see your thumbnail at the size of a matchbox – on a phone, or in the sidebar next to a video they’re already watching. Details that look great in a design app disappear at that size. Previewing it in a realistic feed shows whether the subject, the text and the colours still work.

Thumbnail checklist
- One clear subject. A face or object that fills a third of the frame.
- Three to five words, max. Big, bold text that adds to the title rather than repeating it.
- Strong contrast. Check both light and dark mode – some colours vanish against a dark background.
- Mind the corner. The video length covers the bottom-right corner, so keep text away from it.
- Title and thumbnail work together. Titles are cut after about 70 characters in many places, so put the hook first.

Is my thumbnail uploaded anywhere?
No. The preview runs entirely in your browser. Your image and title are never sent to our server.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
1280 × 720 pixels in a 16:9 ratio, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. The tool tells you if your image is a different size or ratio.
How long can a YouTube title be?
Up to 100 characters, but many layouts only show about the first 60–70. The counter turns orange after 70 so you can keep the important words first.
Is this the real YouTube layout?
It’s a close simulation of YouTube’s home feed, mobile feed and up-next sidebar, built to show sizes and cropping. It isn’t affiliated with YouTube.
How do I change a video’s thumbnail?
In YouTube Studio open the video’s details, choose Thumbnail and upload your file. Custom thumbnails need a verified account.
